KERRANG!

On the front cover, the shot is a medium/long shot as the head and the majority of the body is captured. This is effective as music magazines need to be different to other magazines, for example fashion. So, focussing on the face allows the audience to know the genre of magazine. The image has been shot so the man in the photo is at the top of the magazine, showing he is important. In addition, this makes the audience see him as intimidating and very powerful.
On the double page spread for Green Day, Billie Joe Armstrong’s photo is left justified in the top corner and has a red background. The house style in the magazine includes the colours red and black, which are included in this photo. It is a close up shot which allows the person’s expression to be read by the reader easily. In this case, he looks very emotionless which sets the tone of the article to be serious.

ROCK SOUND

In Rock Sound, the artists are portrayed very differently in every shot. On the front cover, they are each showing their individual personalities, which is easy for the audience to read as the image is a headshot of the band. On the contents page, they are shown to be happy and excited which is a complete contrast, as some of the members on the front cover look serious. This allows the reader to see the different sides to the band and their music.
On the double page spread, the photo is a long distance shot that allows you to see them head to toe. A few of the boys are leaning over in order to show they are not intimidating, but equal to those reading the magazine.

Q

The type of shot used here is a medium close - up shot. The camera is eye level with those in the photo, which shows we are equal. This is important in magazines that involve more than one person in the front cover, or rock bands as they can be seen as quite intimidating.
The shot has been taken so one member is at the front, and the others are at the back, showing he is the most well known and the leader of the band.

SOURCE

The shot used on the front cover of "Source" is a close-up shot of the artist, "Lil Wayne". The shot captures the unique elements about him, such as his tattoos and chains. It is common amongst hip hop magazines for the image of the artist to be a close up, as hip hop is quite an intimidating genre so this is perceived in the shot.
The facial expression on the artist is a mix of confusion, disgust and intimidation. Again, this is common amongst hip hop magazines as many artists are very confident and want to get that across to their fans. The shot infers that the artist is well known, as they are standing out in comparison to the other elements on the page, and from other magazine front covers that may be medium or long shots.

BLAZE

The shot used for the front of this hip hop magazine is a medium shot. Close up shots and medium shows are the two most popular shots used on hip hop magazines for different reasons. Close ups show the facial expression of the artist, which is usually quite intimidating and confident. Medium shots show the facial expression as well, however they allow the reader to get a glimpse of the artists clothes which are usually expensive and covered in chains and rings.
This is the case for this medium show, as it is allowing the reader to see Jay Z's outfit which is a simple white bandana and shirt. This is unusual as many rappers wear jewellery.
His facial expression is almost like a snarl which is what animals do when they are angry or ready to kill something. This makes the artist look very threatening and confident. These facial expressions are usually used by famous artists, such as Jay Z.

VIBE

This shot is different to many hip hop magazine shots as it involves parts of the artists body.
He is making direct eye contact with the audience through looking at the camera. This draws in the audience due to the eye contact which creates a connection between the reader and the artist.

In addition, holding his hands together shows that he has power, but he also is quite caring and calm. He is superimposing the masthead which further shows his dominance and power. This links to the type of music he creates, which is usually all about asserting wealth and power to artists fans and competitors.
